Object Description
Title
Emergency
Meeting
for
No
Curfews
flier
Subject
Parietals
Description
This
protest
flyer
advertised
an
“Emergency
Meeting
for
No
Curfews
Walkout.”
This
meeting
was
designed
to
create
clarity
about
the
walkout
that was
going
to
occur
in
order
to
protest
the
strictness
of the
college’s
parietal
standards
.
Parietals
refer
to the
rule
on
visiting
privileges
of the
opposite
sex
in an
individual's
dormitory
room
. This was a
highly
debated
issue
among
the
Fitchburg
State
University
campus
in the
1970s
. The
protest
for
parietals
began
with
petitioning
in
1968
. On
March
12th
,
1970
the
faculty
voted
that their
occupation
does
not
hold
a
valid
position
in
deciding
the
case
of
parietals
, and that
it
was not
appropriate
for them to
decide
because
they are not
supposed
to be the
parents
of their
students
. In
April
of
1970
the
women
of
Herlihy
housing
held
a
sit
in. As a
result
,
later
in the
semester
weekend
parietals
were
allowed
until
midnight
at
Herlihy
. By the
fall
semester
of
1970
, a
greater
liberalization
of the
halls
occurred
. In
November
of
1971
all
halls
were
allowed
visitation
with
concrete
scheduling
.
Visitation
was
allowed
by the
opposite
sex
on or
past
midnight
six
out
of
seven
days
of the
week
.
Still
,
students
were not
fully
satisfied
because
overnight
visits
were
still
banned
. In
April
1973
,
after
increased
petitioning
and
protesting
,
Fitchburg
State
College
allowed
complete
overnight
visitation
.
