The
Cycle
,
vol
1(3)
,
1969
Subject
Censorship
,
Free
Press
,
Student
Newspaper
Description
In the
fall
semester
of
1969
, the
editor-in-chief
of the
FSC
Cycle
newspaper
reprinted
the
short
story
“Black
Moochie”
by
known
civil-rights
activist
and
Black
Panther
Eldrige
Cleaver
.
College
President
James
J
.
Hammond
and the
regular
printer
Raymond
Plante
took
issue
with the
language
and
content
of the
story
and
printed
an
edited
version
. The
school
board
considered
the
article
“garbage”
and
unfit
to be
published
in the
school
paper
.
Student
newspaper
editor
,
John
Antonelli
found
a
different
printer
using
alternative
funds
to
print
it
in its
entirety
.
Hammond
changed
school
policy
for the
student
newspaper
requiring
that he, or a
faculty
advisor
, would
pre-approve
all
future
issues
of the
paper
before
they were to be
published
and
sent
out
across
the
campus
. This
lead
to
further
disputes
between
the
administration
and the
editorial
board
of the
paper
, and by
November
20th
1969
the
editorial
staff
resigned
from their
posts
at the
newspaper
.
Antonelli
sued
Hammond
over
a
violation
of the
1st
and
4th
amendments
of the US
constitution
. This
issue
of the
Cycle
includes
several
articles
referencing
many
students’
distaste
for
President
Hammond’s
decision
to
override
the
student
editors’
authority
in
publishing
the
short
story
“Black
Moochie”
by
Eldridge
Cleaver
, as
well
as the
censored
version
of the
story
itself
. The
articles
include
“An
Open
Letter
to the
Student
Body”
in
which
editor
John
Antonelli
expresses
his
faith
in the
student
body
to
make
informed
decisions
as
opposed
to
Hammond’s
complete
distrust
in his
students
,
“Clamps
of
Censorship
Tightened”
which
discusses
the
censorship
issue
that has
taken
over
campus
,
“How
Do
You
Spell
Catastrophe”
by
Anthony
McNamara
discusses
the
small
concern
Hammond
should have
about
the
free
speech
issue
on
campus
compared
to the
wide-spread
violence
that has
taken
place
on
campuses
across
the
nation
, and
“Let’s
Think
Seriously
About…”
lists
off
an
A-Z
list
of
worries
President
Hammond
and the
student
body
should have
before
worrying
about
censoring
the
student
newspaper
. This
issue
of the
Cycle
is
important
in
viewing
the
Hammond
vs
.
Antonelli
case
,
because
it
is
the
first
instance
in
which
students
show
a
sense
of
revolt
against
the
president
and the
institution
. This
issue
is
a
stepping-stone
in the
direction
of
understanding
the
students’
point
of
view
in the
censorship
debate
and
is
a
necessary
document
to
look
through
in
order
to
understand
this
piece
of
Fitchburg
State’s
history
.
